Rotten Tomatoes reported a 57% Tomatometer score in February 2025, while Metacritic assigned a 52 Metascore for the same period. The consensus acknowledged Josh Hartnett’s committed performance. Benjamin Lee of The Guardian called it "a thriller that incorrectly thinks it's fiendishly smart." Peter Travers of ABC News countered that Hartnett "performs miracles," a contradiction that leaves the film sitting comfortably in the mixed column.
How it did with audiences
Trap cost $30 million to make and pulled in $43 million domestically, with a worldwide total of $84 million. That is a modest profit, the kind that keeps the lights on but does not spark a boardroom frenzy. On TMDB, users give it a 6.2 out of 10. Audiences watched, paid, and then drifted, suggesting the movie was fine, just not essential.
