What kind of watch this is
Toy Story 2 is a 92-minute animated comedy where a sentient cowboy doll learns the hard way that being collectible is not the same as being loved. John Lasseter directs a film that treats its own mythology with surprising weight, asking if Woody would rather be a museum piece or part of a messy, living family. The stakes feel personal rather than epic, grounded in the quiet dread of being forgotten. It is a reminder that the most dangerous place for a toy is not the bottom of the couch, but a glass case.
What the critics said
Critics didn't just like Toy Story 2; they argued it beat the first one. Rotten Tomatoes holds a 100% approval rating and a 9.3/10 average as of 2026. Metacritic scores it 88. Roger Ebert said the film reminded him of something he’d forgotten about toys. Todd McCarthy called it a richer, more satisfying film than its predecessor. That’s a high bar. The consensus is that it’s a rare sequel that improves on its predecessor.
How it did with audiences
Toy Story 2 spent $90 million to make $497 million worldwide, a margin that turns a solid investment into a very loud one. In the United States, it pulled in $246 million. That figure landed it as 1999’s highest-grossing animated film. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences enjoyed the sequel enough to ignore the fact that it was a sequel.
What came next for the cast
Tom Hanks arrived from Saving Private Ryan and left for Cast Away. Kelsey Grammer, fresh off Frasier, eventually swapped sitcom dignity for X-Men: The Last Stand. Tim Allen remained firmly in the holiday lane with The Santa Clause 2. These trajectories ran in parallel, not as a single path. The credits do not link cause and effect here. They merely chart where each actor went next.
