Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
A mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit.
After seven months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at Bill Willoughby, the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Jason Dixon, an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

What kind of watch this is
Martin McDonagh directs this 115-minute crime drama. The film hinges on a single, stubborn refusal to accept inaction, turning a quiet town into a pressure cooker. Frances McDormand anchors the chaos. It is a movie that asks you to sit with anger, not just watch it. The dry humor hides a genuine ache. You will not look at roadside advertising the same way.
What the critics said
Critics leaned hard into the praise. Rotten Tomatoes tallies 90% positive reviews from 411 critics, averaging 8.4 out of 10 as of November 2024. Metacritic sits at 88 out of 100 based on 50 reviews, a score it files under universal acclaim. IMDb users agree, giving it 8.1 out of 10 as of April 2026. Richard Roeper called it the best movie he saw that year, while Steve Pond noted the pacing slackens after a mid-film twist. The consensus balances dark comedy with searing drama.
How it did with audiences
A $12 million budget against $159 million in worldwide gross is a strong return on investment. In the US and Canada, it pulled in $54.5 million, while the rest of the world added $105.7 million to that total. Audiences rated it 8.1/10 on IMDb as of April 2026.
Awards
The film collected 4 awards from 7 nominations. Frances McDormand took the Academy Award for Best Actress, and Sam Rockwell won Best Supporting Actor. The BAFTA for Best Film and the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama went to the picture itself. It was a solid haul for a movie about billboards.
What came next for the cast
Frances McDormand moved from Transformers: Dark of the Moon to Nomadland. Sam Rockwell swapped Iron Man 2 for Jojo Rabbit. Woody Harrelson traded The Hunger Games for Venom. The credits show a shift in scale and tone. They do not prove the film caused it. Careers are strange corridors with unexpected doors.
