What kind of watch this is

Paul Thomas Anderson directs a 158-minute drama where a silver miner turns oil prospector in California. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, a man who uses his son to project a trustworthy, family-man image while consing local landowners into selling him their valuable properties for a pittance. Paul Dano plays Eli Sunday, a local preacher who suspects Plainview's motives and intentions. Their feud burns slow. It is not a film about friendship. It is about two men who hate each other with a precision that feels surgical. The runtime is long. You will not feel it. The tension is that tight.

What the critics said

Critics mostly agreed on the scale, though they argued about the scale. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 91% as of January 2026, backed by a Metacritic score of 93. That is a heavy consensus for a film about oil and hatred. Richard Schickel called it "one of the most wholly original American movies ever made." Glenn Kenny focused on the lead, noting the performance makes the character unique. Not everyone was swept up. Mick LaSalle warned against pretending it is a masterpiece just because the director tried, finding the final scenes ridiculous. He preferred the mess to the myth.

How it did with audiences

$25 million in, $76 million out worldwide. The United States alone added $40 million to that total, which keeps the math comfortably in the black. TMDB users rate it 8.1 out of 10, while IMDb users give it an 8.2 as of January 2026.

What came next for the cast

Daniel Day-Lewis went from Gangs of New York to Lincoln and Phantom Thread. Paul Dano followed Little Miss Sunshine with Prisoners and 12 Years a Slave. Ciarán Hinds moved from Road to Perdition into Game of Thrones. Kevin J. O'Connor shifted from The Mummy to The Master and Chicago P.D.. The credits list what came next, not why. That distinction matters more than the receipts.
