What kind of watch this is
Ridley Scott directs this 130-minute drama about two friends taking a weekend trip that quickly turns into a life-or-death run. The tone shifts from a standard buddy movie to a tight, breathless thriller. One moment they are arguing about bad decisions, the next they are outrunning the law. It does not need a sequel or a deeper lore to work. The ending rewrites the beginning.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports an 87% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, while Metacritic assigns a 89/100 Metascore from the same date. IMDb’s weighted average sits at 7.6/10 as of May 2026. Janet Maslin of The New York Times called it "a surprise on this and many other scores." Roger Ebert noted the film "shows a great sympathy for human comedy," though he deducted half a star for the final freeze frame. Some critics argued the film unfairly demonized men, a claim Maslin rejected as a double standard against male-led road movies.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. IMDb’s weighted average sits at the same 7.6/10 as of May 2026. The box office figures are missing, which is strange for a movie that rearranged how two women can leave a dinner party. Audiences seem to have done the arithmetic, though the studio’s ledgers remain conspicuously silent.
Where it left its mark
That final drive off the cliff became iconic. It became a template for endings, spawning everything from cartoon parodies to video game easter eggs. The visual shorthand is so potent it even inspired a few real-life tragedies near the Grand Canyon. On a more personal note, singer-songwriter Tori Amos watched the film and wrote "Me and a Gun" about her own past trauma. It is a rare ending that haunts the industry decades later.
