What kind of watch this is
Aaron Sorkin directs, which means the dialogue hits like a gavel. The film runs 130 minutes, a precise amount of time to watch the legal system try to digest a chaotic event. Sorkin treats the courtroom as a boxing ring where words are the only punches. Sacha Baron Cohen plays Abbie Hoffman, while Eddie Redmayne plays Tom Hayden. It is a history lesson that refuses to be polite.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 89% as of November 2022, with an average rating of 7.8. Metacritic, less enthusiastic, lands on 76. The consensus notes it is an actors' showcase that plays to Sorkin's strengths. Richard Roeper called it one of the best movies of the year, a claim that ignores the fact it is a dramatization, not a documentary. Eric Kohn gave it a B, noting Sorkin directs with full conviction. Those are the high notes. The dissent is quieter, but present.
How it did with audiences
The box office data for this one is a blank space, so we skip the financial autopsy. Instead, we look at how people felt about it. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10. That is a solid score.
What came next for the cast
Eddie Redmayne spent the years before this title in wizarding worlds. Afterwards, he returned to that franchise, but also stepped into The Good Nurse and The Day of the Jackal. Joseph Gordon-Levitt had been busy with Inception. Since then, he has appeared in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The credits list what came next. They cannot prove the film caused that shift.
