What kind of watch this is

David Fincher directs a 121-minute drama that treats the creation of a global platform like a slow-motion car crash. The film skips the inspirational origin story in favor of the legal and personal fallout that follows. It is less about code and more about the specific, petty cruelty required to build an empire. Jesse Eisenberg plays a man who has already lost the plot by the time he gains the world. The pacing is tight, the dialogue is sharp, and the stakes feel surprisingly human for a story about a website.

What the critics said

Critics agreed. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 96% approval rating based on 335 reviews. Metacritic sits at 95 out of 100, a score that signals universal acclaim. The consensus is that the script is impeccable and the direction beautiful. Roger Ebert called it the best film of the year, noting it is "cocksure, impatient, cold, exciting and instinctively perceptive." Not everyone bought in. Nathan Heller at Slate found the Harvard setting "maddeningly generic," arguing the film got the university's social dynamics wrong. A valid point, if you believe the regatta blazers were the real problem.

How it did with audiences

The Social Network cost $40 million and returned $225 million worldwide, a ratio that makes the accounting department smile. It opened at No. 1 with $22.4 million, then held the top spot for a second weekend with a 31.2% drop. That performance broke Inception’s record for the smallest second-weekend decline for a number-one film in 2010. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10. Audiences apparently enjoyed watching a founder get sued by the people he outsmarted.

Awards

The Social Network took home 8 awards from 8 nominations. At the 83rd Academy Awards, it secured Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. It also swept the "Big Four" critics awards, a feat matched by only 2 films before it. The Golden Globes were even kinder, giving it 4 wins. Critics have their favorites; the film just happened to be one of them.

What came next for the cast

Jesse Eisenberg traded the zombie apocalypse of Zombieland for the magic tricks of Now You See Me. Andrew Garfield moved from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus to the web-slinging of The Amazing Spider-Man. Armie Hammer went from Flicka to the drama of Call Me by Your Name. Justin Timberlake kept acting, though In Time arrived shortly after. The credits do not prove this film caused those shifts. They just mark where the paths diverged.
