What kind of watch this is
The Secret Life of Pets is an 86-minute animated comedy directed by Chris Renaud. It swaps the human perspective for the canine one, asking what happens to household pets once their owners leave the house. Louis C.K. voices Max, a terrier whose ordered existence collapses when his owner brings home Duke, voiced by Eric Stonestreet. Kevin Hart plays Snowball. The film runs tight and quick, leaning on voice talent to carry the physical comedy of dogs and cats navigating a human city. It is a movie that takes its own premise seriously enough to make the chaos work, though it never quite lets the audience forget it is talking about animals.
What the critics said
Critics found it pleasant but unoriginal. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 71% approval rating, while Metacritic lands on 61. The consensus calls it a "cheerfully undemanding family-friendly diversion." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called it "totally irresistible." Scott Tobias of NPR saw "gloppy sentimentality." Others noted the heavy Toy Story comparisons. It is fine for a rainy afternoon, provided you do not expect the dog to invent anything new.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $75 million. It took in $886 million worldwide. That is a very good year in any business, and a quiet triumph in film accounting. On TMDB, users rate it 6.3 out of 10. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit at $374.6 million, making it the most profitable release of 2016. The pets did the math before the studio did.
What came next for the cast
Kevin Hart arrived with a string of comedy leads. He left with the Jumanji franchise and a school-night gig. Jenny Slate showed up in a chipmunk’s shadow and a war movie. She stepped out into Venom and Everything Everywhere All at Once. The timeline shows a shift, not a cause. Credits list what happened next, not why.
