What kind of watch this is
Alejandro G. Iñárritu directs a 157-minute film. The camera stays close to the mud, the blood, and the unrelenting cold, forcing the audience to endure what Hugh Glass endures. It is a film about suffering that refuses to look away. Expect silence to carry as much weight as dialogue, and expect the landscape to feel like an antagonist with a grudge. It is not a comfortable watch, but it is a memorable one.
What the critics said
Critics treated the film with a mixture of respect and exhaustion. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 78% as of November 2022, while Metacritic lands on 76 as of June 2025. The consensus is that Leonardo DiCaprio’s physical commitment saves the day. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called it "a virtuoso performance, thrilling in its brute force." David Edelstein of Vulture agreed on the beauty but noted the "traditional masculinity" of the premise. It is a movie that hurts to watch, which is exactly the point.
How it did with audiences
The Revenant cost $135 million to make and took in $533 million worldwide. That is a tidy profit by Hollywood standards, though the accounting gets complicated once you factor in all the extra expenses. In North America, it pulled in $184 million, a figure that looks solid until you remember the competition. It opened wide on January 8, 2016, and took in $39.8 million in its first weekend. That beat projections by 70%, but it still finished behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Audiences on TMDB give it a 7.5 user score.
Awards
4 wins from 12 nominations. Leonardo DiCaprio took Best Actor, his first win. Alejandro González Iñárritu won Best Director for the second straight year. Emmanuel Lubezki picked up Best Cinematography for the third straight year. The film also took home the BAFTA for Best Film. It lost Best Picture to Spotlight, as happens.
What came next for the cast
DiCaprio moved from Django Unchained to Killers of the Flower Moon. Hardy jumped from The Dark Knight Rises to Venom. Gleeson left Harry Potter for Star Wars. Poulter exited The Maze Runner for Midsommar. The credits show what followed. They do not prove this film caused it.
