What kind of watch this is
Alejandro Amenábar’s 2001 film runs 101 minutes and builds its dread in a dark house. Nicole Kidman plays Grace, a mother who keeps her photosensitive children safe in the shadows. The tagline promises they will find you sooner or later, a threat that hangs over every creak of the floorboards. It is a quiet, atmospheric piece of horror that trusts its audience to sit in the dark. The tension comes from what is missing, not what is there.
What the critics said
Critics found the film spooky without needing a big budget. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 84% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, alongside a 7.2/10 average from October 2021. Metacritic sits at 74 out of 100 as of August 2025, which it labels generally favorable. The consensus notes that a movie doesn't need expensive special effects to be creepy.
A. O. Scott of The New York Times called it a flawed but interesting vehicle, noting the story becomes cluttered. He praised Kidman’s conviction, calling it terrifying. Roger Ebert gave it 2.5 out of 4 stars, appreciating the atmosphere while feeling style substitutes for substance. Neil Smith of the BBC awarded it four out of five, citing unbearable tension.
How it did with audiences
$17 million to make, $210 million back. In Hollywood arithmetic, that is a landslide. In any other industry, it is simply a business that works. It opened fourth in the U.S., behind American Pie 2, Rush Hour 2, and The Princess Diaries. It stuck around for three weeks, then jumped to second place. Users on TMDB rate it 7.6 out of 10. Studios love numbers; audiences just wanted the ghost story.
Awards
The Others collected 6 awards from 5 nominations. That math implies a sweep of the Goya Awards for Best Film, Editing, Art Direction, Sound, and Production Supervision in 2002. It also took the Ignotus Award for Best Audiovisual Production.
What came next for the cast
Nicole Kidman traded the gothic tension of Eyes Wide Shut for the bright, broad strokes of Aquaman and Just Go with It. Fionnula Flanagan moved from the quiet, rural charm of Waking Ned to the sprawling chaos of Lost and the dystopian future of The Hunger Games. One actor scaled up in spectacle, the other in scope. The credits list the destinations, not the route. They cannot prove the film steered them there.
