What kind of watch this is
Greg Daniels built The Office on a simple, brutal premise: the camera never stops rolling, even when Michael Scott is doing something deeply embarrassing. It is a mockumentary that treats its own awkwardness as a feature, not a bug. You get 71 hours of this, which is enough time to realize that corporate mediocrity is just a different kind of torture. The dry observation is that you will keep pressing play anyway, because the office job you hate is suddenly the only place where the people are actually interesting.
How it did with audiences
The Office premiered with 11.2 million viewers, a strong start that halved to 5.9 million when NBC moved it to Tuesday nights. It averaged 5.4 million viewers that first season. By 2005–06, the average jumped to 8 million. "Stress Relief" later drew 22.9 million viewers.
What came next for the cast
Rainn Wilson traded indie darlings for Transformers and sharks. John Krasinski moved from small roles to a silent blockbuster. The Office sat between those two poles. It did not cause the shift, but it marked the space where it happened. Credits list what followed, not why.
