What kind of watch this is

The OA is a 2016 sci-fi mystery that plays like a fever dream you cannot wake up from. Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij built a show where the rules are as malleable as the characters' memories. It runs 16 hours across 2 seasons, a duration that feels less like a commitment and more like a trance. It is a strange, hypnotic puzzle that will leave you questioning reality long after the credits roll.

What the critics said

Empire ranked it the ninth best TV show of all time in 2021. That is a high place for a mystery that refuses to explain itself. The BBC listed it at number 88 on its list of the 100 greatest TV series of the 21st century. It also found a home on several decade-end lists. NME placed it twentieth, and Wired put it sixth. Collider included it in an unranked list of the 60 best shows of the decade.

How it did with audiences

The OA arrived without a traditional box office run, so the receipts came in the form of internet discourse. TMDB users rate it 7.5 out of 10. Viewers watched to see if the truth held, not just to watch the story unfold.

What came next for the cast

Jason Isaacs stepped out of the wizarding world into darker territory, trading wands for knives in A Cure for Wellness and barking orders in Star Trek: Discovery. Emory Cohen kept grinding through independent drama, eventually landing a role in Marty Supreme. Brit Marling returned years later for A Murder at the End of the World. The timeline does not prove the series caused these shifts. It just marks where they were standing.
