The consensus notes strong performances and spooky atmospherics, but cites inconsistent logic and narrative slackness. Ben Kenigsberg of The New York Times flagged the lack of consistent narrative logic. Donald Clarke of The Irish Times wrote, "To compare it to a ghost train would be to understate the narrative cohesion that habitually governs those seaside entertainments." Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a C, the lowest grade of the series.

Against a production budget of $22 million, The Nun grossed $366 million worldwide. Deadline Hollywood calculated the net profit at $155 million. In the United States and Canada, it made $117.4 million, while the rest of the world added $248.6 million. It was the highest-grossing film in the franchise until The Conjuring: Last Rites took the spot in 2025. On TMDB, users rate it 5.9 out of 10. The math favors the studio, even if the rating does not.

Taissa Farmiga moved from American Horror Story to We Have Always Lived in the Castle, then returned for The Nun II.
