What kind of watch this is

Frank Darabont’s 2007 film runs 126 minutes. It focuses on the panic that spreads inside a grocery store once the mist arrives. The horror is not just what is out there, but what people do to each other when they are trapped. Thomas Jane plays David Drayton, who has to keep his five-year-old son alive while the group frays. The film treats fear as a contagious disease. It is a tight, claustrophobic look at how quickly civility evaporates under pressure.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes lists a 73% approval rating and a 6.5 average score as of October 2024. Metacritic sits lower at 58, signaling mixed reviews. Critics praised the tension. James Berardinelli called it "dark, tense, and punctuated by just enough gore." Roger Ebert was less convinced, rating it 2 stars. He saw a "competently made Horrible Things Pouncing on People movie" that missed the mark.

How it did with audiences

The Mist cost $18 million to make. It pulled in $26 million from United States theaters and $57 million worldwide. In its opening weekend, it took in $8.9 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences liked the fog enough to keep coming back, or at least to not leave before the credits rolled.

What came next for the cast

Marcia Gay Harden moved from Mystic River to the Fifty Shades trilogy. The tonal whiplash is considerable. Toby Jones went from Finding Neverland to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He traded indie charm for blockbuster utility. Laurie Holden stepped into The Walking Dead after Silent Hill. That is a specific kind of career pivot. The credits cannot say The Mist caused these shifts. They can only mark the date.
