What kind of watch this is

Randall Wallace directs this 132-minute adventure, action, and drama, where the Musketeers reunite. The hook is a simple, brutal political stunt: swap a tyrant for his twin. Leonardo DiCaprio plays both kings, a role that splits the film between dashing action and heavy historical drama. It is not a light watch. The tone leans serious, trading the youthful swagger of the original stories for a grim, cinematic weight. It asks you to take a dethronement as seriously as a war.

What the critics said

The reviews were lukewarm, to put it generously. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 32%, with an average rating of 5.5 out of 10. Metacritic is slightly kinder, though still underwhelming, at 48 out of 100. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it 2½ stars, noting the screenplay was "not well-focused." He saw potential for a "Braveheart" quality film, but only with a rewrite. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times found the production values lacking in unity, comparing the director's inspiration to the Classics Illustrated version of the novel. It is a costume swashbuckler that forgot to be a story.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $35 million. It took in $57 million in the United States and $183 million worldwide. That is a healthy profit, though the opening weekend tells a different story. It opened in second place, behind Titanic. You could not have picked a more conspicuous shadow. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

DiCaprio arrived from Romeo + Juliet and Titanic, then headed toward Inception and The Wolf of Wall Street. Irons stepped away from Lolita to land in the Justice League films. Malkovich moved from Empire of the Sun to Transformers: Dark of the Moon. These shifts do not prove the mask caused them. They simply show where the careers drifted next.
