What kind of watch this is

Jon Favreau directed a 2019 film that runs 118 minutes. It swaps hand-drawn animation for photorealistic CGI, which changes the texture but not the bones. Simba idolizes his father, Mufasa, until Scar, the brother with a plan, turns that devotion into exile. The movie leans hard on nostalgia, trusting that you already know how it ends. Chiwetel Ejiofor voices Scar, and Donald Glover is Simba. It is a faithful retelling of a story you have likely seen before, just rendered in higher fidelity.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 52% approval rating, based on 437 reviews, with an average score of 6/10. Metacritic assigns a 55 out of 100, signaling mixed or average reception. The film holds the record for the highest-grossing movie with a "rotten" rating on the former site. Critics were divided on its fidelity. Kenneth Turan called it "polished, satisfying entertainment." Todd McCarthy argued the "aesthetic caution and predictability" wore down the film in the second half. The digital animals drew criticism for lacking facial expressions and body movement to tell the story.

How it did with audiences

The Lion King pulled in $1.7 billion worldwide, a figure that makes it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It held that crown until 2024, when Inside Out 2 stepped in to take the title. The US market alone contributed $543 million, while China added $116 million. Deadline Hollywood pegged the net profit at $580 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10. It was a financial monster that eventually grew too big for its own category.
