The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

This case is a dangerous game of life and death.

Mick Haller is a charismatic defense attorney who does business out of his Lincoln Continental sedan. Mick spends most of his time defending petty crooks and other bottom-feeders, so it comes as quite a surprise when he lands the case of a lifetime: defending a Beverly Hills playboy who is accused of attempted murder. However, what Mick initially thinks is an open-and-shut case with a big monetary reward develops into something more sinister.

Metacritic assigns a 63/100 Metascore based on 31 critics, a figure that indicates generally favorable reception. The consensus notes that while the plot follows a predictable courtroom thriller formula, Matthew McConaughey’s charming performance leads a solid cast to create briskly enjoyable entertainment. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 3 stars out of 4. He described the plotting as half-realized stabs in various directions but called the film workmanlike, engagingly acted, and entertaining.

How it did with audiences

The film charted no box office numbers in the provided data, so we turn to the critical consensus instead. On TMDB, users rate it 7.2 out of 10. That is a solid mark. It suggests viewers found the pacing acceptable, if not breathtaking. The scores tell us people watched it, but they don't explain why.

What came next for the cast

Matthew McConaughey moved from Contact to Interstellar. Marisa Tomei went from The Wrestler to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. William H. Macy saw a similar arc, trading Jurassic Park III for Room. These transitions happened around this film, but the credits cannot prove the movie caused them. They only mark a timeline where three distinct paths converged briefly before diverging again.
