What kind of watch this is

Ridley Scott directs a 153-minute historical drama where a knight challenges his squire to a duel after the king rules the case can only be settled by blood. The film tells the same events three times, shifting perspective each round. Matt Damon plays the knight, Adam Driver the squire, and Jodie Comer the wife whose testimony drives the conflict. The structure turns a medieval legal dispute into a psychological puzzle. It asks who is lying, and why. The final telling recontextualizes the first two. It is a slow burn that rewards patience.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes tallies 85% positive reviews from 287 critics, averaging 7.3 out of 10. Metacritic assigns a 67 Metascore, a range that lands in the generally favorable zone. The consensus notes the film is well-acted and grand, even if its critique of misogyny misses its mark. Owen Gleiberman of Variety called it "intriguing but overcooked," comparing it to a medieval soap opera. Asher Luberto of TheWrap found the script inconsistent, though the visuals held up.

How it did with audiences

$100 million in. $30 million out. The math is simple, the outcome is painful. It opened at $4.8 million, the worst start of Ridley Scott’s career. Deadline pointed to the 2.5-hour runtime and a difficult subject. Scott later blamed millennials and their phones. Ben Affleck, who co-wrote it. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Matt Damon traded space operas for superhero spectacles and eventual epics. Adam Driver left the galactic conflict to drive Ferraris and walk through Megalopolis. Jodie Comer moved from spy thrillers to zombie apocalypses. Ben Affleck stepped out of the Batcave into accounting dramas. The credits show a scatter, not a map. They cannot say the duel caused the detour. They can only mark the coordinates.
