What kind of watch this is

Tom Hooper directs a 118-minute drama about a king who cannot speak and a therapist who helps him find his voice. Colin Firth plays George VI, a man pushed into the throne by his brother’s abdication and haunted by a stutter. He teams up with Lionel Logue, an unorthodox speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush. Their unlikely friendship becomes the engine of the film, turning a personal struggle into a public duty. The tone is intimate, focusing on the friction between royal protocol and human vulnerability. It is a quiet look at how one man learns to lead, not through charisma, but through sheer, stubborn effort.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes lists a 94% Tomatometer score and an 8.6/10 average as of January 2026. Metacritic sits at 88/100, a number it files under universal acclaim. Empire’s five-star review offered a single, memorable line: "You'll be lost for words." Roger Ebert gave it four stars, calling it "a superior historical drama." The consensus notes the film is predictable but stylish. Le Monde found it a manifestation of British narcissism, yet still admired the acting.

How it did with audiences

$424 million worldwide, a number that turns a quiet British drama into a global box office event. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10, while IMDb reports an 8.0/10 as of February 2026. In the U.K., it held the top spot for four straight weekends, a feat last seen with Toy Story 3. Audiences clearly did the math: they loved it.

Awards

The film secured 9 wins from 17 nominations. At the 83rd Academy Awards, it took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. Colin Firth, Tom Hooper, David Seidler, and Iain Canning each accepted a statuette. The British Academy gave it 7 awards, including Best Film and Best Actor. It also earned European Film Awards for Firth, editor Tariq Anwar, and Hooper. The National Board of Review placed it in their Top Ten.
