What kind of watch this is

Leigh Whannell directs a 124-minute thriller that asks a simple, terrifying question: what happens when the monster has no silhouette? Elisabeth Moss plays a woman who must prove she is being hunted by a ghost that is very much alive. The film strips away the usual horror tropes of shadows and corners, forcing the audience to sit in the dark and wait for a threat that refuses to show its face. It is a test of patience and nerve. The scare is in the space between your eyes.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports 91% positive reviews from 422 critics, with an average rating of 7.8/10. Metacritic assigns a 72/100 metascore, which signals generally favorable reception. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times noted that Moss’s performance gives the movie its emotional stakes. She observed that the character becomes even more shivery when her weeping stops. Jesse Hassenger of The A.V. Club gave the film a B+, praising the centering of her character’s experience. Not everyone agreed. Nicholas Barber of the BBC gave it 2/5, calling it perfunctory compared to A Quiet Place and Get Out.

How it did with audiences

Against a $7 million production budget, the film collected $144.5 million worldwide. That is a strong return for a studio, and a modest one for a hit. In the United States and Canada, it took in $70.4 million, while the rest of the world added $74.1 million. TMDB users rate it 7.1 out of 10. The numbers suggest audiences liked it enough to keep watching, even when the lights went off.

What came next for the cast

The cast split into distinct trajectories after 2020. Elisabeth Moss moved from Us to The French Dispatch and Next Goal Wins. Aldis Hodge stepped from Hidden Figures into Black Adam and Cross. Storm Reid jumped from 12 Years a Slave and Euphoria to The Suicide Squad, The Nun II, and Missing. The credits list these shifts. They do not confirm the invisible man caused them.
