What kind of watch this is
The Intouchables runs 113 minutes and leans on a collision that feels almost impossible: a quadriplegic aristocrat and a young man from the projects. Directed by Éric Toledano, it is a film about dignity, told through jokes that land because the characters do not take themselves too seriously. The chemistry between François Cluzet and Omar Sy does the heavy lifting, making the premise feel less like a setup and more like a friendship that simply works.
What the critics said
Critics leaned toward approval, though not unanimously. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 76% Tomatometer score as of March 2024. The site’s consensus notes the film handles its prickly subject matter with kid gloves, yet gets by on strong casting and sensitive direction. Metacritic lands lower, at 57 out of 100 as of June 2025. Audiences, however, gave it an A. The gap between critical caution and audience enthusiasm is the kind of thing that makes a film endure.
How it did with audiences
The Intouchables cost $12 million and took $427 million worldwide, a return that makes the studio’s accountants look like geniuses and the rest of us look like we just watched a miracle. On TMDB, users rate it 8.3 out of 10, which is high enough to suggest the laughter was genuine. In France, it became the most-watched film of 2011 after four weeks, pulling in $166 million. It also broke the record for the highest-grossing French film, surpassing The Fifth Element. Audiences voted with their feet, and their feet did not stop moving.
What came next for the cast
François Cluzet returned to familiar French territory with Rose Island and Little White Lies 2. Omar Sy jumped oceans, landing in Jurassic World and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Anne Le Ny kept her boots on French ground, appearing in Stillwater and Divorce French Style. The film did not cause these shifts. It just happened to sit in the middle of them.
