What kind of watch this is

Seth Rogen directs a 112-minute blend of action and comedy where two tabloid hosts turn a celebrity interview into a CIA assassination plot. The hook is the absurdity of the target: a surprise fan who happens to be North Korea’s leader. It balances slapstick with geopolitical tension, playing on the shock of the premise rather than the plausibility of the execution. It is the kind of movie that exists to be argued about in the lobby.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 51% based on 154 reviews, with an average rating of 5.70 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 52, a score that signals mixed or average reception. The consensus notes the film was overshadowed by controversy, leaving its middling laughs to rely on two likable leads. IGN’s Roth Cornet called it a clever, sidesplitting parody. Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian found it unessential but agreeable. Not everyone agreed. Scott Foundas of Variety panned it as cinematic waterboarding, comparing its humor to a communist food shortage.

How it did with audiences

It cost $42 million, a sum that usually buys a small feature or a very large holiday. On TMDB, users rate it 6.2 out of 10. That score sits in the middle, where good intentions and mixed results often collide. The box office numbers aren't here, so we rely on the audience vote.

Where it left its mark

The legacy is a Greek television error. In April 2017, Alpha TV and Epsilon TV aired the film’s opening scene, a young girl reciting hate speech, as a real news event. The hosts, Antonis Sroiter and Nikos Evangelatos, apologized on social media after the backlash. That accidental broadcast is the mark. The director, Lynton, wrote in his 2026 memoir that he regretted getting the film greenlit. A mistake that outlived the premiere.
