What kind of watch this is
Brad Bird directed The Incredibles in 2004, a 115-minute animated action-adventure that looks at superpowers through the lens of a middle-aged man in a cubicle. The tagline says super strength can’t carry a family, which is the entire thesis of the film. It is less about punching villains and more about the specific exhaustion of being competent in a world that wants you to be normal. The animation pops when the action kicks in, but the heart beats during the quiet dinner scenes. It earns its place on the shelf because it treats domestic life with the same gravity as a car chase.
What the critics said
Critics adored it, and the numbers back that up. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 97% positive, a score reported in January 2026, while Metacritic landed on 90 out of 100. That is universal acclaim, a term that sounds heavy but fits a film about a family in a trench coat. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times noted the film "alternates breakneck action with satire of suburban sitcom life." Peter Travers of Rolling Stone simply called it "one of the year's best." Not everyone was sold. Eleanor Ringel Gillespie of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution found the "recurring pastiches of earlier action films" boring, wishing the studio would try something else. A rare A+ from CinemaScore seals the deal, though.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $92 million and took in $632 million worldwide, a spread that keeps the accounting department happy. It earned $261 million in the United States, holding the #1 spot at the box office. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10. IMDb gives it 8.0 out of 10 as of May 2026.
