What kind of watch this is

Mike Nichols directs a 107-minute drama that feels less like a movie and more like a panic attack. The tagline calls Benjamin "a little worried," which is doing a lot of heavy lifting for a man completely paralyzed by his own options. Dustin Hoffman plays the young man caught between two women, a situation that sounds like a bad joke until you realize how genuinely uncomfortable it is to watch. It is sharp, awkward, and deeply human.

What the critics said

Critics mostly loved it. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 87% as of November 2022, with an average score of 8.9/10 from October 2021. Metacritic lands on 83/100 in July 2025. A.D. Murphy of Variety called it a "delightful satirical comedy drama," while Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times named it the "funniest American comedy of the year." Dissent existed, though. Richard Schickel of Life argued the film "ends up selling out to the very spirit its creators intended to make fun of." Ebert later revised his opinion, dropping his rating to three stars.

How it did with audiences

The Graduate left theaters without a box office figure in the records, so we lean on the people who watched it. TMDB users give it a 7.6 out of 10. IMDb reports an 8.0 out of 10 as of February 2026, using a weighted average. Two platforms, two numbers, one consensus that Benjamin Braddock’s awkwardness still lands. The math is simple: if you hate watching people fail gracefully, you will find this frustrating.
