What kind of watch this is

Richard Donner’s 1985 adventure leans into the absurd. Mikey and his friends hunt pirate gold while a gang of escaped convicts chases them through caves. The film runs 114 minutes, a tight sprint from the first trap to the final reveal. It treats childhood boredom as a high-stakes crisis. The stakes are real, the traps are elaborate, and the adults are mostly incompetent. It is a film where the map matters more than the money. Don’t let the family label fool you. The humor is sharp, the tension is genuine, and the ending earns its nostalgia.

What the critics said

Critics found it energetic but perhaps a bit loud. Rotten Tomatoes reported 77% positive reviews as of November 2022, averaging 6.7/10. Metacritic settled on 62/100 in October 2025, signaling generally favorable reception. Roger Ebert called it a smooth Spielbergian mix, elevated by high-energy kid performances. Gene Siskel noted that after a dull start, a minor miracle occurs when the kids stop trading wisecracks. Paul Attanasio called it artfully crafted yet uninvolving for those over 12.

How it did with audiences

It cost $19 million and took in $64 million worldwide. On TMDB, users give it a 7.5 rating. IMDb shows a weighted average of 7.7/10 as of February 2026. The numbers are solid, not spectacular. Enough to keep the lights on and the tinfoil hats warm.
