What kind of watch this is
Rob Cohen directs a 106-minute action thriller where speed is the only language that matters. Paul Walker plays an undercover cop who embeds with Vin Diesel’s street racing crew, only to fall for Michelle Rodriguez’s character. The script treats loyalty as a heavier substance than gasoline. It asks if you can love a family that steals trucks for a living. The answer, apparently, is yes.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 53% as of November 2022, while Metacritic lands on 58 out of 100 in June 2025. That is a polite way to say the reviews were mixed. Todd McCarthy of Variety called it a "really good exploitationer." Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times saw "portents of tragedy" in the character work. Not everyone was charmed. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it a C, noting it "works hard to be exciting." The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes compares it to 1950s exploitation flicks, which is a compliment if you like your cars shiny and your plots thin.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $38 million, and the film took in $208 million worldwide. That is a healthy return, though not quite the 212 million the notes claim it ultimately reached. In the United States, it grossed $145 million, opening at number one ahead of Dr. Dolittle 2 and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. It was one of four Universal releases that year to top $40 million in their opening weekends. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. The arithmetic works out in the studio’s favor, even if the opening weekend numbers seem to disagree slightly.
What came next for the cast
Paul Walker traded Pleasantville for a decade of cars. Jordana Brewster moved from The Faculty to a similar trajectory. Vin Diesel had Saving Private Ryan behind him before pitching his face to the franchise. The credits do not prove the film caused the shift. They just list what came next.
