What kind of watch this is
Mike Flanagan’s 2023 adaptation runs 8 hours across 8 episodes, a commitment that matches the patience required to watch a dynasty collapse. The tone is less Gothic horror and more slow-motion structural failure, where the mystery lies in how long the house can stand before gravity wins. It is a drama about inheritance, where the currency is blood and the exchange rate is death. You do not watch it for jumpscares; you watch it to see the architecture rot from the inside out.
What the critics said
Critics leaned into the darkness. Rotten Tomatoes counts 91% positive reviews from 116 critics, averaging 7.9 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 73, citing generally favorable reviews. The cast, directing, and editing drew specific praise. Ben Travers of IndieWire noted the allegory delivers "visceral satisfactions," a verdict that lands hard. Not everyone agreed. Aja Romano of Vox argued the series lacks the passion central to Poe's work. It dies like gothic horror, she said, but never lives like it.
How it did with audiences
The Fall of the House of Usher drew 6 million views in its debut week. That made it the most-watched English-language fiction program on Netflix at the time. It landed third overall, behind the French series Lupin and the documentary Beckham. The following week, it climbed to the second spot with 7.9 million views. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10.
