What kind of watch this is

Taylor Hackford directs a 144-minute film. Keanu Reeves plays a defense attorney who climbs the ladder of success until the rungs start to burn. Al Pacino delivers a performance that reads less like a man and more like a force of nature, wearing the suit of the world’s most powerful law firm. The film operates on a single, escalating premise: you can win every argument, but the cost of victory is your own soul. It is a long, slow burn of moral compromise, where the real horror is not the supernatural, but the seductive logic of the deal.

What the critics said

Critics found the blend of supernatural thrills and character exploration mostly effective, though perhaps undone by its own lofty ambitions. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 63% as of 2024. Metacritic lands on 60 out of 100, which it files under mixed or average. Roger Ebert felt the John Grisham stuff clashed with the Exorcist stuff, leaving his mind racing ahead of the plot. Owen Gleiberman called it almost embarrassingly entertaining.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $57 million, and the film took in $153 million worldwide. Audiences rated it 7.5 on TMDB. It opened to $12.2 million in October 1997, landing second behind I Know What You Did Last Summer. The Halloween season was crowded with youth-oriented thrillers, but this one held its ground. It ran for months, finishing in February 1998. The math works out.
