What kind of watch this is
The Devil All the Time is a 138-minute crime drama set in the bleak backwoods of Ohio. Antonio Campos directs a cast that includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Bill Skarsgård, who converge on the young protagonist Arvin Russell. The tone is heavy, atmospheric, and relentlessly dark, focusing on how these sinister characters collide. It plays like a slow burn that refuses to offer comfort. The tagline, "Everyone ends up in the same damned place," sums up the inescapable dread. It is not a light watch.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 65%, a figure that suggests the film worked for most, if not all. The consensus notes the cast is stellar, even if the descent into darkness feels punishing. Metacritic is less generous, landing on 55 out of 100, which it files under mixed or average. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune praised the ensemble for authenticating the milieu. Not everyone agreed. Ryan Lattanzio of IndieWire called it a colossal misfire, a sweaty mess from start to finish. He did like the acting.
How it did with audiences
On TMDB, users rate it 7.2 out of 10. That is a solid score for a film that refuses to let you look away, even when the screen gets very dark. The numbers are the only bright thing here.
