What the critics said
Critics didn’t just dislike The Dark Tower; they actively preferred other things. Rotten Tomatoes sits at a 16% approval rating as of November 2024, backed by an average score of 4.1/10 from October 2021. Metacritic lands on 34/100 as of November 2025, a number that translates to "generally unfavorable reviews." The consensus isn't subtle: "Go then, there are other Stephen King adaptations than these." Peter Travers called it an "unholy mess." TheWrap’s Dan Callahan agreed, labeling the 95-minute runtime a "complete disaster."
Audiences were slightly kinder, giving it a "B" on CinemaScore. But even that charity has limits. When the critics say a movie is a limp shell, they usually mean it.
How it did with audiences
The Dark Tower cost $60 million. It made $113.2 million worldwide. That is a profit, technically. It opened to $19.1 million, taking the number one spot from Dunkirk. However, it was the second lowest gross for a top film in 2017. It then dropped 58.9% in its second weekend. Audiences on TMDB rate it 5.8 out of 10. The math says it paid for itself.
What came next for the cast
Idris Elba moved from the MCU’s second phase to its third, a trajectory less about cause and more about scheduling. Matthew McConaughey shifted from serious drama to a mix of heists and horror, proving range is just a matter of genre selection. Claudia Kim jumped from Marvel to Harry Potter, a leap that says less about the film and more about the sheer volume of tentpole casting. The credits list what came next, not why it came next.
