Schaffer scored it 2/10 and called it "boring – really boring," a take that feels less like a review and more like a complaint about a long night.

The budget was $0 million, which makes the $249 million worldwide gross a statistical anomaly rather than a business plan. It opened in 27 theaters and eventually grossed $140.5 million in North America. On TMDB, users rate it 6.4 out of 10. For a film where running down stairs caused motion sickness, the audience engagement was quite literal.
Where it left its mark
The Library of Congress noted in 2017 that the film established a new type of documentary psychological horror. Its rich fictitious history became a template for modern horror screenplays. Critics like Michael Dodd argued it modernized horror by showcasing terrors captured by the average American.
It inspired a long list of imitators, from Paranormal Activity to The Den. Ruggero Deodato acknowledged similarities to his Cannibal Holocaust. The creators of The Last Broadcast initially alleged it was a rip-off, then backed off. A genre was born, and it still haunts the format.
