What kind of watch this is
The Amazing World of Gumball runs for 48 hours across 6 seasons. In that time, a 12-year-old cat and his goldfish brother navigate middle school in a city where physics is a suggestion. The show treats the mundane as absurd, letting a simple errand spiral into existential dread or cosmic error. It is not a series that stays in its lane. It is a 48-hour commitment to being completely, deliberately weird.
What the critics said
Critics generally loved it, which is surprising for a show about a cat and a fish. Variety’s Brian Lowry called it "first-rate silliness," while Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker found it "wildly imaginative." The A.V. Club’s Noel Murray gave the early episodes a B+, praising the "well-developed world" that keeps the chaos grounded. Even Common Sense Media’s Emily Ashby, who awarded three stars, admitted it’s a place where kids' wildest imaginings come to pass. The show also drew praise for its political satire and pop culture nods, from Final Fantasy to Cowboy Bebop. It’s a weird mix that somehow works.
How it did with audiences
The Amazing World of Gumball skipped the box office entirely, so there are no ticket sales to audit. Instead, it relies on a TMDB user score of 8.5. That is a high mark for a show built on the premise that a fish and a cat live in a dysfunctional household.
