What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 70% as of August 2024, with an average rating of 6.2 out of 10 from October 2021. Metacritic lands on 54 out of 100, a score that signals mixed or average reception. It is a tidy middle ground. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman called it "the first vital Terminator sequel since Terminator 2." He sees the franchise waking up. Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal disagreed, calling the plot "time travel as multiverse Dada." That is a specific kind of chaos. The film works for some, and fails for others, depending on how much nostalgia you trust.
How it did with audiences
It cost $185 million and made $261 million worldwide. That gap, plus the marketing bill, left the studios down $122.6 million. Audiences rated it 6.4 on TMDB. The opening weekend was the weakest in the series since the original, accounting for inflation. A bad start, a smaller finish, and a franchise that paused.
