What kind of watch this is

Martin Scorsese directs a 114-minute crime drama where insomnia turns into obsession. Travis Bickle drives a cab through New York, treating the streets like a war zone he intends to sanitize. The film sits in a specific frequency: quiet, paranoid, and visually relentless. It does not ask for your comfort. It asks for your attention while the city rots around a man who believes he is the only one seeing clearly. The camera lingers on empty lobbies and rain-slicked asphalt, making the silence feel heavier than the action. It is a study of isolation that never looks away.

What the critics said

Critics largely agreed on its merit. Rotten Tomatoes holds an 89% Tomatometer score as of January 2026. Metacritic assigns a 94/100 Metascore, a figure that signals universal acclaim. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called it "a hell" from the opening shot to the final scene. Pauline Kael of The New Yorker described it as the "fevered story of an outsider in New York." Not everyone bought the fever. Leonard Maltin gave it 2 stars, finding it "ugly and unredeeming.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $2 million, a number that looks almost accidental next to the $117 million it eventually collected. That sum is the highest figure in the data, dwarfing the $29 million reported for worldwide earnings and the $28 million from the United States alone. It made the 17th-highest-grossing list for 1976, a specific rank that feels oddly precise for a movie that opened with a house record at the Coronet Theater. On TMDB, users give it an 8.1 score, while IMDb pegs it at 8.2/10 as of March 2026. The audience did the math long before the accountants did.

What came next for the cast

Harvey Keitel and De Niro both appeared in Mean Streets two years prior, yet their paths diverged sharply. Keitel drifted into Pulp Fiction and The Grand Budapest Hotel, while De Niro stayed closer to Scorsese with GoodFellas. Jodie Foster arrived via Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and left for The Silence of the Lambs. Cybill Shepherd moved from The Last Picture Show to Moonlighting and eventually Psych. The film did not dictate these routes. It merely marked a point in time.

Where it left its mark

Paul Schrader wrote the script and directed three others in what he calls a "Man in a Room" series, treating the leads as one aging character. That continuity is a nice way to frame a career. De Niro’s Travis Bickle inspired Meryl Streep to become the kind of actor she wanted to be. Jacques Audiard modeled his Dheepan hero on De Niro’s vigilante, and Todd Phillips drew from the film for Joker. The influence travels in odd directions, from British TV psychopaths to Tamil Tiger fighters. It is a lineage built on one man’s specific brand of isolation.
