What kind of watch this is

Danny Boyle’s 2007 thriller treats the end of the world as a procedural. The sun is dying, a first team failed, and a second team goes up to fix it. It is 108 minutes of tension, where the real enemy is not the cold but the people inside the ship. Boyle directs with a handheld restlessness that makes the vacuum of space feel suffocatingly close. The stakes are absolute, yet the movie leans into the messy, human frictions of a crew under pressure. It is a science fiction film that cares more about who you are when everything is going wrong than about the physics of the sun.

What the critics said

Sunshine sits in that awkward middle ground where approval is real but not rapturous. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 77% Tomatometer score as of October 2024, alongside a 6.8/10 average of rated reviews from October 2021. Metacritic lands on a 64 out of 100 as of October 2025, which signals mixed feelings rather than consensus. Sean Axmaker saw a "visionary odyssey" with the scope of Kubrick. Roger Ebert called the effects "convincing and remorseless." Others were less charmed. Mick Lasalle noted the film starts "bad" and gets worse, while Joanne Kaufman dismissed it as a "warmed-over stew" of genres. The third act seems to be where the magic, or the madness, really skids.

How it did with audiences

Sunshine took in $32 million at the global box office. For a film that opened in 407 UK cinemas and eventually hit 44 countries before a US release, that is a modest sum. TMDB users rate it 7 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Cillian Murphy moved from 28 Days Later to Batman Begins, then into Inception. Chris Evans swapped Not Another Teen Movie for The Avengers. Rose Byrne dropped Troy for X-Men: First Class, and Michelle Yeoh stepped away from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to join Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The credits cannot say Sunshine caused that pivot. They can say what followed.
