What kind of watch this is

Succession is a 38-hour drama about a family fighting over the throne of a media empire. Jesse Armstrong built it on the premise that money does not fix broken people; it just gives them louder voices. The tone is a mix of high-stakes corporate maneuvering and awkward, painful family dinners where no one says what they mean until it is too late. It rewards patience. You will sit through the silence to hear the next cut.

What the critics said

Critics barely blinked. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% average score for the series, while Metacritic gives it 85. That’s a strong start, though the numbers climb as the family falls apart. Season 2 earned a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89 on Metacritic. The third and fourth seasons matched that 97% approval rating, with Metacritic scores of 92 for both. It’s the kind of consistency that makes critics feel like they’re judging a dynasty rather than a show. They did, though.

Awards

The show won the 2023 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, a win that followed its Golden Globe victories in 2020, 2021, and 2023. Jesse Armstrong took home the writing prize in 2019, while Adam McKay and Nicholas Britell claimed directing and music honors that same year. It also picked up the 2019 BAFTA for Best International Programme. In total, the series collected 12 major awards. The voting body clearly enjoyed watching a family implode on cue.

What came next for the cast

Kieran Culkin spent the nineties as a child in Home Alone, then re-emerged as an adult in A Real Pain. Jeremy Strong moved from The Big Short to The Gentlemen, a steady shift rather than a break. Sarah Snook traded Steve Jobs for Pieces of a Woman, keeping the intensity but changing the setting. Brian Cox went from Zodiac to Dexter: Resurrection, a jump from thriller to serial killer. The credits cannot say the series caused these specific choices. They can say what followed.
