What kind of watch this is
Paul Verhoeven directs Starship Troopers. It is a sci-fi action film wrapped in 129 minutes of high-octane bug-hunting. The movie takes its military heroism seriously, then undercuts every victory with a wink at the audience. The result is a war movie that is both thrilling and deeply cynical, perfect for viewers who appreciate when a blockbuster knows its own flaws.
What the critics said
Critics missed the joke. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 72% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, while Metacritic lands on 52 out of 100 as of August 2025. Many reviewers mistook the satire for sincere fascism. Stephen Hunter called the film a "perversion" of Remarque’s novel. Adam Smith of Empire argued Verhoeven admired Heinlein’s world more than he claimed. Those who saw the satire, like Roger Ebert, found it indistinguishable from the fascist utopia it mocked. The film remains watchable as a live-action comic book, if nothing else.
How it did with audiences
It spent $105 million and pulled in $121 million worldwide, a margin that studios might call acceptable and accountants call a headache. In the United States, it grossed $55 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.1 out of 10, while IMDb lists a 7.3 weighted average as of February 2026.
