Rotten Tomatoes reports an 86% approval rating for the first season, averaging 7.3 out of 10 across 92 reviews. Metacritic lands on 67 out of 100, a score that signals generally favorable reception. The consensus notes the animation is beautiful, even if the lore might overwhelm casual viewers. Joel Keller of Decider called it a "worthy" spinoff. Joshua Rivera of Polygon saw it as doing "slow, careful work" to tease out potential. The second season climbed to 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the third holds 87%.
How it did with audiences
Whip Media named it the most anticipated new series in May 2021. That hype translated into viewing time. Nielsen estimated 251 million minutes watched in its first week. By 2024, Luminate reported 923 million minutes streamed. In the first half of 2026, that figure hit 368.1 million minutes. On TMDB, users rate it 8.1. The numbers suggest a steady, long-tail audience rather than a single spike.
