SpongeBob SquarePants (1999)
Be there and be square!
Deep down in the Pacific Ocean in the subterranean city of Bikini Bottom lives a square yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, loves his job as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, and has a knack for getting into all kinds of trouble without really trying. When he's not getting on the nerves of his cranky next door neighbor Squidward, SpongeBob can usually be found smack in the middle of all sorts of strange situations with his best buddy, the simple yet lovable starfish, Patrick, or his thrill-seeking surfer-girl squirrel pal, Sandy Cheeks.

What kind of watch this is
Stephen Hillenburg built a world where a square sponge works the fryer at a fast-food restaurant, right next door to a squid who hates everything. The show runs on pure, unfiltered enthusiasm. SpongeBob tries too hard, Patrick thinks too little, and the ocean floor accepts all of it with mild bewilderment. It is loud, colorful, and relentlessly cheerful, often in ways that feel a bit too loud. Nineteen seasons and 689 episodes add up to 126 hours of underwater chaos. It is the kind of comfort food that stains your brain.
What the critics said
Critics found a show that works harder than its cutesy wrapper suggests. Laura Fries of Variety called it thoughtful and inventive, noting it is clever enough to hold the attention of teens and adults alongside kids. Joyce Millman of The New York Times later named it the most charming toon on television, praising its ability to dance between childhood and adulthood. Robert Thompson of Syracuse University saw a refreshing breath from the pre-irony era, arguing that its deliberate naivety allows hipness to be grafted onto it. Bettijane Levine of the Los Angeles Times simply called it a brain balm for stressed-out grown-ups.
How it did with audiences
The box office data is a blank space, a void where numbers usually live. Without revenue to measure its reach, the only metric that matters is the rating. On TMDB, users give the pilot a 7.7. That is a solid score. It suggests the joke landed. It also suggests people still remember him.
Where it left its mark
SpongeBob outgrew the cartoon. After the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, the character became a fashion staple, appearing on everything from hijabs to boxer shorts. Daniel Kohn of Vice wondered if the sponge had become a symbol of resistance. Sherief Elkeshta, an Egyptian-American filmmaker, asked why the images never showed the character holding a Molotov cocktail. A Tumblr project called "SpongeBob on the Nile" documented the phenomenon. Patrick Kingsley of The Guardian insisted the trend had no political significance. Yet facetious presidential campaigns launched in Egypt and Syria. The character’s reach is hard to quantify, but it certainly stretched far beyond the ocean floor.
