What kind of watch this is
Jan de Bont directs a 1994 action thriller where a Los Angeles bus is rigged with a bomb that detonates if the vehicle drops below 50 mph. Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock spend 116 minutes trying to keep it moving while Dennis Hopper tries to stop them. The tension comes from the simple, terrifying constraint: you cannot stop. It is a movie that runs on the edge of a cliff.
What the critics said
Critics treated Speed less as a movie and more as a cardio session. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% approval rating as of 2026, while Metacritic settles on a 78, which translates to generally favorable reviews. Roger Ebert awarded it 4 stars, citing "manic exhilaration." Gene Siskel added that "all of the sequences work." Even the dissent is polite. Desson Thomson found the plot "overextended," which is a specific complaint for a film that never stops moving. It is the kind of thriller that respects your time, even if it ignores your pulse.
How it did with audiences
A $30 million budget that returned $350 million worldwide is the kind of arithmetic that makes accountants smile. In the United States, it pulled in $121 million. Audiences rated it 7.2 on TMDB. The box office did the talking first; the rating confirmed it.
Awards
10 wins out of 16 nominations. The Academy gave David MacMillan Best Sound and Stephen Hunter Flick Best Sound Editing. John Wright took the BAFTA for editing, while Flick also won for sound. Sandra Bullock collected two MTV Awards, one for performance, one for being desirable. Dennis Hopper was the Best Villain. The sound team got the nods; the actors got the plastic.
What came next for the cast
Keanu Reeves had just finished Bram Stoker's Dracula and Point Break. Then came The Matrix and the John Wick franchise. Dennis Hopper moved from Apocalypse Now to Waterworld and the TV series 24. Sandra Bullock stepped out of Demolition Man into Gravity and Bird Box. Joe Morton went from Terminator 2 to the Justice League films. The credits do not claim Speed caused any of this. They just record what happened next.
Where it left its mark
The premise traveled beyond the screen. A 2005 video game level, "Velocity" in Pursuit Force, adapts the core concept: a cop rescuing hostages from a bus that explodes if it slows. Even Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) borrowed the burning bus and the "pop quiz, hotshot" line. In 2024, de Bont, Reeves, and Bullock reunited for a 30th-anniversary Q&A. It is a bus that never really stops moving.
