Soul (2020)

Everybody has a soul. Joe Gardner is about to find his.

Joe Gardner is a middle school teacher with a love for jazz music. After a successful audition at the Half Note Club, he suddenly gets into an accident that separates his soul from his body and is transported to the You Seminar, a center in which souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child. Joe must enlist help from the other souls-in-training, like 22, a soul who has spent eons in the You Seminar, in order to get back to Earth.

What kind of watch this is

Pete Docter directs this 101-minute animated drama about a jazz teacher whose soul detaches from his body after a successful audition. It spends most of its runtime in a surreal afterlife seminar where souls acquire their passions. The premise sounds like a quirky premise. It becomes a quiet argument against chasing the next big break. Jamie Foxx voices Joe, while Tina Fey plays 22, a soul who has spent eons in the You Seminar. The film is less about getting back to life than about what life actually is.

What the critics said

Critics leaned toward praise. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% approval rating as of 2026. Metacritic sits at 83, which it files under universal acclaim. Jason Solomons of TheWrap highlighted the "colorful visuals and gentle wisdom." A. O. Scott of The New York Times noted its "combination of skill, feeling, and inspiration." Not everyone bought it. Molly Freeman of Screen Rant found the third act a "rush to the finish line" that diluted the themes. The film’s racial framing drew sharper criticism, with some reviewers arguing it simplified Black culture for a broader audience.

How it did with audiences

Soul cost $150 million and made $121 million worldwide, a financial result that studios usually call a loss and fans call a bargain. On TMDB, users rate it 8.1 out of 10. The numbers suggest the movie found its audience exactly where it mattered, even if the spreadsheet didn’t.

Awards

Soul picked up 4 major animated feature honors. It took the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the Annie Award, the Critics' Choice Award, and the Kids' Choice Award. The notes mention other wins, but these four headline the list. The Academy also gave it Best Original Score. That is a lot of animation recognition for one film.

What came next for the cast

Jamie Foxx moved from Django Unchained and Baby Driver to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tina Fey stepped away from Mean Girls and Date Night, then returned via Only Murders in the Building and a new Mean Girls. Graham Norton followed I Could Never Be Your Woman with The Idea of You. Rachel House went from Thor: Ragnarok to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The credits show the paths, not the cause.
