What kind of watch this is
Small Prophets blends comedy, drama, and mystery in a 3-hour run. It hinges on a mundane suburban shed becoming the site of supernatural inquiry. Michael Sleep, a DIY store worker, uses an alchemical recipe to create homunculi. He waits for their prophecies to answer if his girlfriend, who vanished seven years ago, will come back. The magic is quiet, domestic, and slightly absurd. It is a slow burn that trades in the quiet hope of the mundane.
What the critics said
The critics took a liking to it, and they did so loudly. The Guardian gave it five stars, calling it "pure, pure pleasure." The Times matched that score, praising Crook’s "joyous storytelling." The Daily Telegraph settled on four, finding it "eccentric, funny, sweet, and sad – often all at once." No one seemed to hesitate. It even won best series at Series Mania 2026. A consensus this warm usually means the writers had a good run.
How it did with audiences
Small Prophets draws no box office figures, so the ledger stays blank. The only number that matters is the TMDB user score of 8.2. Audiences skipped the accounting and went straight to the verdict. That is a rare moment when the crowd agrees without needing a spreadsheet to justify the position.
