What kind of watch this is

Danny Boyle directs a 121-minute drama that treats a game show confession as a lens for a lifetime of survival. The film builds its hook on the tension between a contestant accused of cheating and the brutal, accidental history that actually made him a genius. It is not a clean, tidy biography. It is a chaotic, high-stakes flashback that trusts the audience to keep up with its rapid cuts and shifting timelines. The romance is the spine, but the world around it is a sprawling, dusty machine of chance. It runs long enough to hurt, which seems right for a story about surviving Mumbai.

What the critics said

Critics treated it less like a movie and more like a fever dream they were happy to catch. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 92% approval rating and an 8.4/10 average as of January 2026. Metacritic lands on 84 out of 100 for the same period. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called it "a breathless, exciting story," while Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal named it "the film world's first globalised masterpiece." Anthony Lane of The New Yorker was the outlier, noting a mismatch between the city's reality and the film's fantasy. He suggested viewers either chide the film for abandoning realism or simply go with the flow. Most seem to have chosen the flow.

How it did with audiences

It cost $15 million and took in $378 million worldwide. That is a very efficient way to make money. On TMDB, users rate it 7.7 out of 10. It became Fox Searchlight Pictures's highest-grossing film ever, which is a title that sits comfortably on a shelf. The audience did the math and found the numbers checked out.

Awards

At the 2009 Academy Awards, the film took home 8 of its 10 nominations. Best Picture went to producer Christian Colson, and Best Director to Danny Boyle. The cinematography prize, won by Anthony Dod Mantle, marked a first for digital cameras. It also swept all 4 Golden Globe nominations. The Academy likes to surprise, but not this many times in one night.

What came next for the cast

Dev Patel stepped into Slumdog Millionaire fresh from Skins. The credits that followed include The Last Airbender, Chappie, and Lion. A leap from teenage angst to global fame, then a stumble into CGI animation. Anil Kapoor arrived with a stint on 24. Afterward, he joined Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The timeline does not prove the film caused the shift. It just marks where the road bent.
