Owen Gleiberman called it a "choppily plotted crowd-pleaser," missing the alchemy of Burton's best work. It is a visual feast that might leave you hungry for a tighter plot.

Budgeted at $100 million, the film generated $206 million worldwide. It opened at No. 2, marking the highest opening weekend of Johnny Depp’s career until Pirates of the Caribbean broke that record in 2003. On TMDB, users rate it 7.2 out of 10. IMDb gives it a 7.3/10 as of February 2026.
What came next for the cast
The cast split into distinct orbits. Depp moved from Edward Scissorhands to Pirates of the Caribbean. Ricci went from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to Wednesday. Richardson and Gambon both landed in Harry Potter. Credits list what followed, not cause and effect. The film did not mandate those specific next steps. It merely sat in the middle of them.
Where it left its mark
The film seems to be entering a second act, or at least a comic book one. Paramount signaled a feature reboot in 2022, with Lindsey Beer attached to write and direct. Then IDW Publishing stepped in. In 2025, they announced Return to Sleepy Hollow, scripted by Casey Gilley and illustrated by Savanna Mayer. Three months later, the first issue hit shelves. By May 2026, a five-issue prequel titled The Witches of the Western Wood followed, written by Delilah S. Dawson and drawn by Jose Jaro. It is rare for a movie to spawn both a reboot and a full comic saga. The headless horseman is finding new roads.
