What kind of watch this is
Garth Jennings directs a 108-minute musical where a koala named Buster Moon tries to save his struggling theater by hosting a singing competition. The hook is simple: animals singing pop songs. It leans hard on the talent behind the voices. Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, and Seth MacFarlane bring real stage presence to the roles, which keeps the animation from feeling like a generic children’s movie. The tone is breezy and unapologetically commercial. It is a film that knows exactly what it is: a vehicle for catchy songs and big-name vocals. If you want to hear McConaughey belt a power ballad in a cartoon, this is the place.
What the critics said
Critics found the warmth but not much depth. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 71% as of January 2025, with an average rating of 6.4 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 59 out of 100, a score it labels mixed or average. It is a film that knows exactly what it is. USA Today’s Brian Truitt called it "toe-tapping," a description that feels accurate for the footwork. The Los Angeles Times’ Katie Walsh spotted "genuinely funny moments," which is all the proof you need that it works. The consensus calls the story familiar, a note that hits harder when the songs are this catchy.
How it did with audiences
The production budget was $75 million, and the worldwide gross hit $634 million. That gap usually signals a solid hit, though the math depends on how you count marketing and talent fees. Deadline Hollywood pegged the net profit at $194.2 million, ranking it as the 7th most valuable blockbuster of 2016. On TMDB, users give it a 7.1 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
McConaughey moved from Interstellar to a stretch of mixed results, including The Dark Tower. Witherspoon pivoted from Legally Blonde to Big Little Lies. Johansson stayed deep in the Marvel universe, jumping from Age of Ultron to Infinity War. The film did not cause these shifts. It just happened to be there when they happened.
