Silicon Valley (2014)

How big is too big?

In the high-tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success. Partially inspired by Mike Judge’s own experiences as a Silicon Valley engineer in the late ‘80s, Silicon Valley is an American sitcom that centers around six programmers who are living together and trying to make it big in the Silicon Valley.

What kind of watch this is

Silicon Valley is a comedy about six programmers who are living together and trying to make it big in the Silicon Valley. Created by Mike Judge, Dave Krinsky, and John Altschuler, the show runs for 25 hours across 6 seasons. It captures the specific panic of engineers who have solved a technical problem but cannot explain it to a venture capitalist. The humor comes from watching brilliant people fail at the mundane parts of fame. It is sharp, fast, and deeply uncomfortable for anyone who has ever lied on a resume.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season a 95% rating, averaging 7.9 out of 10 from 57 reviews. Metacritic scored it 84 out of 100 based on 36 reviews. The critical consensus called it a relevant and hilarious take on contemporary technology. Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter noted HBO found its best full-on comedy in years. Matt Roush of TV Guide compared the cast to The Big Bang Theory's science nerds. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com praised the jokes but found the character development slow. David Auerbach of Slate argued the show did not go far enough to be a biting commentary. The second season later earned 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 86 on Metacritic.

How it did with audiences

Silicon Valley defies the usual box office math because it was a television series, so there is no ticket revenue to count. The only hard number here is the TMDB user score, which sits at 8.1. That is a high mark for a show about people who write code and lose their minds doing it.
