What kind of watch this is

Signs is a 2002 thriller that treats a farm as a fortress. M. Night Shyamalan directs it, and it runs 106 minutes. The hook is quiet dread. Mel Gibson plays Graham Hess, while Joaquin Phoenix is his brother, Merrill Hess. The film asks what you would do if the ground beneath you stopped being solid. It is a slow burn that keeps its hands in its pockets until the final act. The scares come from what is almost there, not what is there.

What the critics said

Critics found the suspense effective, even if the logic wasn't. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 76% approval rating from 241 reviews, while Metacritic scores it 59 out of 100, a mark that usually signals mixed feelings. Roger Ebert gave it four stars, calling it "the work of a born filmmaker." He appreciated that Shyamalan ditched a traditional payoff. Not everyone agreed. Mick LaSalle gave it one star, finding "few thoughts and no thrills." The film left audiences with an average B grade from CinemaScore. It built dread, then asked you to trust the silence.

How it did with audiences

$72 million in, $408 million out. That arithmetic looks less like a gamble and more like a very confident bet on M. Night Shyamalan’s next move. The opening weekend set records for Mel Gibson, and the film ultimately outgrossed his earlier hit Ransom. It also beat the previous benchmark for Disney live-action originals, a title Pearl Harbor held before. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. Not every audience member saw the same alien invasion, but everyone agreed the numbers were impressive.

What came next for the cast

Mel Gibson went from Braveheart to The Expendables 3. Joaquin Phoenix moved from Gladiator to Joker. Rory Culkin stepped out of Ri¢hie Ri¢h and into Lords of Chaos. The timeline does not prove the film shaped those paths. It only marks where they were when the credits rolled.
