What kind of watch this is

Sicario: Day of the Soldado runs 122 minutes of violence that feels less like action and more like a bureaucratic failure. Director Stefano Sollima directs a team that includes Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro, pushing them into a border war where the rules have officially dissolved. The tagline promises no rules this time, and the film delivers on that specific, grim promise. It is a tense, kinetic look at how quickly moral lines blur when agents and operatives work outside the law. The violence is blunt, and the politics are messy.

What the critics said

Critics gave it a polite shrug. Rotten Tomatoes settled at 62% with a 6.3/10 average as of October 2021, while Metacritic landed on 61 out of 100, which translates to generally favorable. Variety’s Peter Debruge called it "tense, tough, and shockingly ruthless at times." Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter saw a "worthy, rough-and-tough sequel." Not everyone was as forgiving. Ani Bundel of NBC News dismissed it as "irresponsible" propaganda. That is a harsh verdict for a movie that mostly just wants to shoot things.

How it did with audiences

Sicario: Day of the Soldado pulled in $50.1 million in the United States and Canada, plus $25.7 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $75.8 million. Against a reported $35 million budget, that is a healthy return, though the math gets murkier if you count the higher production costs some outlets cited. It opened with $19.1 million, a solid jump over its predecessor’s wide release numbers. On TMDB, users give it a 6.9 out of 10. The audience did the math, and it checks out.
