Shrek 2 (2004)
What happens after happily ever after?
Happily ever after never seemed so far far away when a trip to meet the in-laws turns into a hilariously twisted adventure for Shrek and Fiona. With the help of ever-faithful Donkey, Shrek takes on the potion-brewing Fairy Godmother, pompous Prince Charming, and infamous ogre-killer Puss In Boots.

What kind of watch this is
Shrek 2 is a 92-minute animated comedy that asks a simple, terrifying question: what happens after happily ever after? It is not a sequel that repeats the first film’s jokes. It is a darker, sharper look at the mess that follows the magic. The Fairy Godmother is not a helpful aunt. She is a villain with a potion and a plan. Prince Charming is not a hero. He is a pompous threat. The film runs on the idea that domestic life can be its own kind of horror. It is for people who want their fairy tale to have a spine. The humor lands because the stakes are personal.
What the critics said
Critics treated the sequel with a measured hand, acknowledging its flaws while still enjoying the ride. Rotten Tomatoes reports an 89% approval rating as of August 2026, alongside a 7.9/10 average. Metacritic lands on 75, a solid "generally favorable" mark. Roger Ebert called it "bright, lively, and entertaining." Peter Rainer, less charmed, noted it undoes the joy of the first. The consensus admits it is not as fresh as the original, but topical humor and colorful characters keep it a winner.
How it did with audiences
Budgeted at $150 million, Shrek 2 pulled in $923 million worldwide, with $441 million of that coming from the United States. It was the highest-grossing film of 2004 and the biggest in its own franchise. The numbers speak for themselves, though the franchise’s subsequent entries would require a lot more talking to justify their existence. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Mike Myers stepped out of the Austin Powers mold into Inglourious Basterds and Bohemian Rhapsody. Eddie Murphy returned to the sequel lane with Coming 2 America, a move that felt less like evolution and more like a callback. Cameron Diaz moved from the gravity of Gangs of New York to the lighthearted chaos of The Holiday and Knight and Day. Julie Andrews, fresh from The Princess Diaries, joined the group that leaned into fantasy and family fare. The credits do not claim this film broke their careers. They simply record the paths that followed.
