What kind of watch this is
Sex and the City is a 1998 drama-comedy about four single women in their late thirties navigating New York’s social scene while dissecting their sex lives. Created by Darren Star, it runs for 36 hours across 6 seasons. The show is less about romance and more about the specific anxiety of buying a handbag to fill an emotional void. It is a 94-episode deep dive into how much a person can talk about shoes before the silence becomes uncomfortable.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes puts the series at 70% approval. That number climbs to 90% for the final season, a jump that suggests the show found its footing late in the game. Metacritic lands on 64, a score that translates to generally favorable. The consensus notes the show secured its spot as a harbinger of women-centric television. Critics also flagged problematic blindspots. It is a tidy way to say the show was ahead of its time but still human.
How it did with audiences
No box office figures to report, which saves us from the usual math about whether a series made its money back. The only number we have is a 7.4 on TMDB, a user score that sits comfortably in the "solid" column. It’s the kind of rating that suggests people watched it, liked it, and didn’t feel the need to set the internet on fire about it. A quiet consensus, which is often the most honest kind.
What came next for the cast
Before 1998, Sarah Jessica Parker was in Hocus Pocus and Kim Cattrall in Police Academy. Cynthia Nixon had already done Amadeus. After the series, the group reunited for the 2008 film and its 2010 sequel. Parker returned for Hocus Pocus 2 in 2022, while Cattrall starred in The Ghost Writer. Nixon pivoted to Ratched in 2020, and Davis took on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The credits list the projects; they do not assign the cause.
